Out Riding

r0000255

I’ve been riding pretty regularly this month, sometimes with others, more often solo. I’ve ridden the nice groomed trails up American Fork Canyon (several times), from Pine Hollow all the way up to the summit via the road, Trail 150, the Ridge Trail, Pine Hollow Trail, the Timpanooke Loop, the Aspen Grove side of the Alpine Loop, Round Valley up at Park City, and Big Springs up South Fork Canyon. One day last week I rented a fatbike for my 16 year old son Lars and rode. He had a great time and had not been on a bike since the mountain bike racing season ended in early November.  The riding has been good this month and it has been nice to have a bit more time to get out (now that school is out for the semester). Below are photos from various rides over the past few weeks.

  1. Just what I was looking to see! I am an Orem native and getting back into bicyles after years and years on motorcycles. I bought a cheapie fatbike to play around with, to see if I like it and I am having tons of fun.

So I was wondering what some of the trails around here are like in the winter and came across your post. I have ridden most of those trails on dirtbikes in the summer over the years, but am anxious to try them out in winter. Also shopping for my “keeper” fatbike too so your blog is very helpful.

I have some other 40-something friends I am trying to get into it as well. Can you recommend a good “starter” trail here close that would be fun for various levels of skill and fitness?

    1. Hi Matt. The trails up South Fork at Big Springs are pretty good moderate trails. They pack out pretty fast from all the traffic and there are no really hard climbs or anything. The main trail down is really fun in the snow.

The trails up at Round Valley in Park City are good too. If you want mellow you can just stick with the wide groomed trails, and if you want tougher stuff there is lots of singletrack.

Finally, Bonneville Shoreline Trail above Provo packs out pretty quickly and is okay for riding as well.

Good luck. How to see you out there on the trails.

      1. Thanks for the tips!

I am planning on skipping work on Friday and heading up to check some of these out in the morning, and maybe head up AF canyon in the afternoon.

Fatbiking is a lot more fun than jogging!
